Shepherd's Hut

There are quite a few of these dotted around Wiltshire, quietly rotting in the corners of fields.
Back in the days before commercial fertilizer, the best way to keep the right level of nutrients in the downland soil was to graze sheep before ploughing and allow them to fertilize as they went. This naturally involved a great deal of sheep movement, and wherever the sheep went, the shepherd, his tools, medicines, dog - and at lambing time his bed - were sure to follow. The first recorded use of a rolling shepherd's hut was in 1596, and they were used right up to the middle of the 20th century.
This one's a bit of a beast with it's heavy timbers and big wheels, the better for navigating the rutted tracks between fields.
